How Do I Get the Best 3D Ultrasound Pictures
December 9, 2023Updated January 29, 2026
A 3D ultrasound session isn't cheap ($50–$250 depending on location), and you only get one shot at each stage of pregnancy. Here's how to maximize the quality of those images so you walk away with pictures worth framing.
Schedule at the Right Time
Timing is the single biggest factor. Book your session during the 27–30 week sweet spot, when your baby's facial features are well-developed but there's still enough room (and amniotic fluid) for a clear view.
Stay Well-Hydrated
Amniotic fluid acts as a natural "window" for the ultrasound. The more fluid between the probe and your baby's face, the clearer the image. Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment—not just the morning of. Check with your provider for specific guidelines on how much and when.
Get Your Baby Moving
A baby who's facing outward and active gives the sonographer more angles to work with. Many providers suggest a cold or sugary drink shortly before the session to encourage movement. Ask your provider whether this is appropriate for you.
A Little Luck Helps Too
Even with perfect preparation, some sessions produce better images than others—baby's position and cooperation play a big role. But by timing it right, staying hydrated, and encouraging movement, you're giving yourself the best chance at clear, detailed images to treasure.
