What week is best for 3D ultrasound
December 30, 2023Updated February 5, 2026
Timing makes or breaks a 3D ultrasound. Book too early and your baby's face hasn't developed enough detail. Book too late and there's not enough room for a clear shot. Here's the window you're aiming for.
Too Early: 13–23 Weeks
At this stage, your baby's facial features are still forming. A scan at 13 weeks shows little more than a basic outline; by 20 weeks you'll see a recognizable face, but it won't have the soft, rounded features that make a 3D scan feel real. This BBC video shows how dramatically facial development progresses in the womb.
Too Late: After 32 Weeks
Beyond 32 weeks, two things work against you. First, the baby may "drop" (head moving into the pelvis), which can obstruct the face. Second, there's simply less room—your baby is larger and more tightly packed, which can make the face appear squished against the uterine wall or placenta.
The Sweet Spot: 27–30 Weeks
Most ultrasound providers agree that 27 to 30 weeks is the ideal window. At this point your baby's facial features are well-defined, there's still plenty of amniotic fluid (which acts as a clear viewing window for the ultrasound), and the baby hasn't yet moved into the head-down birthing position.
Every Pregnancy Is Different
These guidelines work for most pregnancies, but factors like amniotic fluid levels, baby's position, placenta location, and your body type can all affect image quality. Talk to your healthcare provider—they can help you pick the best timing based on your specific situation.
